When was my L.C. Smith shotgun manufactured?

You can obtain the date of manufacture using one of three methods.

  1. Order a research letter.
  2.  A table with serial numbers and dates may be found on this site.
  3. A third method is to enter the serial number and other information in a search feature on this site.

Unfortunately, the serial numbers for hammerless non-ejector shotguns between about 23000 and 30000 have been lost.  Also, the serial numbers can be a little confusing because the Hunter Arms Company occasionally reused blocks of serial number.  For example, numbers from about 30XXX (1890) and 44XXX (1897) were used in 1920 and 1921.  The early shotguns may have a number grade stamped on the water table of the receiver and “Hunter Arms Co.” engraved on the rib. The post-1913 shotguns have a letter representing the grade (F = Field, S = Specialty, etc.) stamped on the water table and the grade (Field, Specialty, etc.) marked on top of the right barrel and “Hunter Arms Co. Inc. M'F'R's Fulton, N.Y., U.S.A.” on top of the left barrel.
